How to set up your Oman eSIM before you fly
- Check your phone. It needs eSIM and no carrier lock. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phone check
- Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Any time up to 180 days before. Your days don't start until it first connects in Oman.
- When you land, switch the kimsim line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. You won't be charged roaming: kimsim is prepaid. Keep roaming off on your home line.
- Make kimsim your mobile data line. Your home number stays on for calls and texts.

Good to know: Oman
Oman is a road-trip country, so your data has to work in a car between Muscat, the Hajar mountains, the Sharqiya desert and Salalah, with long quiet stretches in between. The two things that catch visitors out are calls, because WhatsApp calling only started working unofficially in late 2024, and Musandam, which you reach by road from the UAE but which needs an Oman plan.
What a week of data costs in Oman
Prices for 7 days of data, checked on 3 November 2026. Daily passes charge each day you use the phone abroad, per phone. Oman isn't covered by European "roam like at home" deals.
| Option | Price for 7 days | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Vodafone UK, pay monthly, no roaming included | £56 (£8 a day) | Your usual allowance. Oman is in Zone D, outside Euro Roam and Global Roam |
| Verizon TravelPass (US) | $84 ($12 a day) | Your plan's allowance, charged each day you use it |
| Telstra (Australia) | No Day Pass for Oman | Pay-as-you-go roaming rates, sent by text when you land; Upfront plans get no roaming data |
| Telekom SurfPass Oman S (Germany) | €4.95 | 1 GB in total for 7 days |
| du roaming voice and data bundle (UAE, postpaid) | AED 100 | 5 GB and 50 minutes for 7 days, starting when you buy it |
| Vodafone Oman Visitor Plan 4, bought in Oman | OMR 4 | 8 GB, 50 minutes and 50 local texts; passport, new Omani number |
| Ooredoo Tourist 5, bought in Oman | OMR 5 plus 5% VAT for 10 days | 8 GB, 50 local and 50 international minutes; passport, new Omani number |
| kimsim Oman Unlimited, 7 days | See the 7-day price in the plan picker above | 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; installed before you fly |
For a family of four on Verizon, that's $336 for one week. Indian visitors should check their carrier's app for an Oman pack: we couldn't find an official Oman price from Jio or Airtel to compare.
Landing at Muscat (MCT), Salalah (SLL) or Khasab (KHS)
Most visitors land at Muscat International (MCT), 32 km from old Muscat. Its terminal opened in 2018. Switch the kimsim line on as the plane taxis in, so you can reach your driver or car hire desk before you're through immigration.
British visitors can stay up to 14 days without a visa. For longer stays, apply online first and pick the "unsponsored visit visa"; visas on arrival are also available at Omani airports. Border officers can ask for a return ticket, a hotel booking and travel health insurance, so keep those documents on your phone where you can open them without Wi-Fi. Oman's visa exemption covers 103 nationalities. Some, including Indian citizens, only qualify if they also hold a visa or residence permit for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan or the Schengen area. Applications go through the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal.
Out of the terminal, you can book Otaxi or Oman Taxi, the apps licensed for airport pickups. Metered airport taxis have counters in the baggage and arrivals halls, and Mwasalat buses A1 and 8 stop at the airport.
Salalah's airport (SLL) is 5.5 km north-east of the city centre. Khasab (KHS), the airport for Musandam, has flights from Muscat.
Networks and coverage
Oman has three mobile networks. Omantel was the country's first telecoms company and the first to launch 5G there, in 2020. Ooredoo Oman launched in 2005 as Nawras and took the Ooredoo name in 2014. Vodafone Oman is the newest: it started trial service on 30 December 2021 and launched officially on 6 March 2022. Brands such as Friendi and Renna resell space on the bigger networks.
Coverage is good in towns and on the main highways. It thins in deep mountain canyons, on cliff paths and in the high dunes, and can drop briefly in tunnels on the coast road. The networks your plan uses are listed above.
Region by region
- Muscat: the strongest signal in the country. Use it to download offline maps for everywhere else.
- Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams: main roads, plateau villages and resorts generally have signal; canyons and rim walks often don't. Jebel Shams is Oman's highest mountain, about 240 km from Muscat, and drops below 0 °C in winter.
- Wahiba (Sharqiya) Sands: camps near the desert edge usually have signal; deep in the dunes, expect none.
- Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid: the car park is the place to send your messages. The UK Foreign Office warns that wadis flash-flood after heavy rain from October to March, so check the forecast while you still have data.
- Sur and Ras al Jinz: the coast road is generally well covered. Ras al Jinz, the easternmost point of Arabia, is a green turtle nesting site with a turtle reserve.
- Salalah and Dhofar: the khareef monsoon brings fog and drizzle from about June to early September, and Gulf families come for it. The 2026 Khareef Dhofar season ran until 21 September with more than 100 events. Expect busier networks in town at peak times.
- Musandam: Khasab's dhows take visitors through the fjord-like inlets, and the town is a popular trip from the UAE by road. Out on the water and near the border, your phone may pick up a UAE network that your Oman plan can't use. If data stops, choose the network yourself and pick Omantel.
Getting around
Most visitors hire a car. The Foreign Office says desert and mountain trips need a well-equipped 4x4, ideally in convoy, with water, a phone and your plans left with someone. Watch for camels and goats on the road. Musandam can only be reached by land from the UAE, through Ras Al Khaimah or Dibba. If you drive in from Dubai, your plan has to cover Oman from the border onwards.
Apps worth having
- Taxis: Otaxi or Oman Taxi. Uber's city list doesn't include Oman, and Careem's ride service lists 9 countries, none of them Oman. Sign up at home, where any text code reaches your usual number.
- Food delivery: Talabat delivers food, groceries and medicine in Oman.
- Maps: download offline areas for every route outside Muscat. This matters more in Oman than almost anywhere else in the Gulf.
- Messaging: WhatsApp works for messages. For calls, see below.
WhatsApp, FaceTime and calling apps
Oman restricted internet calls for years. On 4 December 2024, users reported WhatsApp voice and video calls working without a VPN. TRA sources said calls seemed possible for some users, but there was "no official communication". In April 2025 the regulator said it doesn't ban apps outright and regulates calling services through licences. We found no official statement on FaceTime.
We haven't tested calls on our plans in Oman. Plan on messages and voice notes, and treat calls as a bonus. Your eSIM is data only, with no phone number, so keep your home line on for normal calls and texts. The regulator has said it intervenes when VPNs are used for illegal purposes.
SIM and phone rules
An Omani tourist SIM is a new local number tied to your passport. Ooredoo sells its Tourist SIM at its airport stores and asks for your original passport. Omantel's tourist pack is bought at an Omantel outlet or partner with a valid passport, includes 1 GB free for the first day, and the line lasts 30 days. Tourist SIMs don't roam, so they stop working when you drive back into the UAE.
A travel eSIM installed at home skips the shop, the passport check and the new number.
Common mistakes
- Crossing into Musandam on a UAE plan. Khasab is in Oman. How regional plans work
- Leaving Data Roaming on for your home line. Oman is in the expensive zones of most home carriers. Why roaming goes on for the kimsim line only
- Starting the plan on a stop-over. Connecting through Dubai or Doha? Keep the kimsim line off until you land in Oman. If your plan started early
- One phone for the whole car. On a road trip everyone shares the driver's hotspot, and the data goes fast. Size the plan for the family.
- Relying on data in an emergency. Call 9999 for police, ambulance or fire from your home line or a local phone; a data-only eSIM can't dial it.

How we put this page together
On 1–3 November 2026 we checked Oman's three operators' own pages, the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal, the UK Foreign Office, Omani news reports of the regulator's statements, carriers' roaming price pages and the other sources noted above. We'll keep them up to date. We haven't measured speeds or coverage in Oman ourselves, and we haven't tested calling apps on our plans there, so coverage notes are general guidance, not a map. kimsim sells the eSIMs on this page.

Oman eSIM: questions travellers ask
Do WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work in Oman?
WhatsApp messages and voice notes work. Oman long restricted internet calls, and users reported WhatsApp voice and video calls working without a VPN from December 2024, but the regulator made no official announcement. In April 2025 it said it doesn't ban apps outright and regulates calling services through licences. Treat WhatsApp and FaceTime calls as likely to work but not guaranteed, and keep your home line on for a call that really matters.
Can one eSIM cover Oman and Dubai, or a Musandam trip from the UAE?
Not the Oman plan, which works in Oman only, and a UAE plan doesn't work in Oman either. Musandam is part of Oman even though you reach it by road from Ras Al Khaimah. The Global plan shown above covers Oman and the UAE on one eSIM; check every stop on your trip is on its list before you buy.
Is an Omantel, Ooredoo or Vodafone tourist SIM cheaper than an eSIM?
On price per gigabyte it can be. Vodafone Oman's Visitor Plan 4 is 4 rials for 8 GB over 7 days, and Ooredoo's Tourist 5 is 5 rials plus VAT for 8 GB over 10 days. Both need your original passport at a shop and give you a new Omani number. A travel eSIM installed at home works as you land and keeps your own number in the phone.
Is there Uber in Oman, and how do I get a taxi from Muscat airport?
Uber's city list doesn't include Oman, and Careem's ride service doesn't list it either. At Muscat airport you can book a taxi through Otaxi or Oman Taxi, the two apps the Ministry of Transport licensed for airport pickups, or take a metered airport taxi from the counters in the arrivals hall. Download one of those apps at home so you can sign in before you fly.
Will my eSIM work at Wahiba Sands, Jebel Shams and the wadis?
Mostly on the way there, less so once you arrive. Main roads, mountain villages and desert camps near the edge of the sands usually have signal, but deep canyons, rim walks, wadi pools and the open dunes often don't. Download offline maps before you leave Muscat, tell someone your plans, and don't count on data to call for help on a hike.
Which network does the Oman eSIM use?
A kimsim Oman eSIM connects to Omantel (5G). It does this on its own once Data Roaming is on for the kimsim line, so there's nothing to choose.
Does the Oman eSIM work on 5G?
Yes, on Omantel, where there's 5G coverage and your phone supports 5G. Everywhere else it uses 4G, which is plenty for maps, messages, social media and video calls.
How much data do I need for a week in Oman?
Many travellers use around 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. For a typical week, the 10 GB pack is a sensible start, and you can top up onto the same eSIM. If you stream or use hotspot every day, Unlimited suits you better.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Oman?
Yes. kimsim Unlimited gives you 3 GB at full speed every day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of that day, which is fine for messages, maps and music but not HD video. Pick how many days you need; the allowance resets daily.
Can I use my Oman eSIM in other countries?
An eSIM for Oman works in Oman only. For a trip that goes further, Global (117 countries) cover Oman and more countries on one eSIM. Check every country on your trip is on the plan's list before you buy.
