How to set up your Qatar eSIM before you fly
- Check your phone. It needs eSIM and no carrier lock. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phone check
- Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Any time up to 180 days before. Your days don't start until it first connects in Qatar.
- When you land, switch the kimsim line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. You won't be charged roaming: kimsim is prepaid. Keep roaming off on your home line.
- Make kimsim your mobile data line. Your home number stays on for calls and texts.
Step by step: iPhone · Android · Samsung · Pixel

Good to know: Qatar
Doha is a hub first: many travellers only change planes at Hamad International, and on a short layover the free terminal Wi-Fi is all they need. If you are staying, Ooredoo says its network reaches every municipality in Qatar, so the gaps are out in the dunes towards the Inland Sea, not in Doha.
What a week of data costs in Qatar
Prices for 7 days of data, checked on 3 November 2026. Daily passes charge each day you use the phone abroad, per phone. Qatar isn't covered by European "roam like at home" deals.
| Option | Price for 7 days | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Vodafone UK, pay monthly, no roaming included | £56 (£8 a day) | Your usual allowance. Qatar is in Zone D, outside Euro Roam and Global Roam |
| Verizon TravelPass (US) | $84 ($12 a day) | Your plan's allowance, charged each day you use it |
| Telstra International Day Pass (Australia) | A$70 (A$10 a day) | 2 GB a day |
| stc GCC package (Saudi Arabia) | SAR 460 for 10 days | Unlimited internet and calls in Qatar and four other Gulf countries; no 7-day option (4 days is SAR 287.5) |
| Ooredoo Visitor SIM Go, bought in Qatar | QR 75 | 6 GB and 25 local minutes for 7 days; passport, new Qatari number |
| Vodafone Qatar Ahlan Pack 65, bought in Qatar | QR 65 | 5 GB and 25 local minutes for 7 days; passport, new Qatari number |
| kimsim Qatar Unlimited, 7 days | See the 7-day price in the plan picker above | 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; installed before you fly |
For a family of four on Verizon, that's $336 for one week. The Qatari packs are cheap per gigabyte, but each one means a counter or an online passport check after you land.
Landing at Hamad International (DOH): Doha eSIM steps
If you're only changing planes at Hamad International, you don't need data. The airport has free #HIAQatar Wi-Fi throughout the terminal for up to four hours at a time, and you can reconnect when the time runs out. You can't stay in the transit area for more than 24 hours between flights, even with a transit hotel booking. Keep any eSIM that covers Qatar switched off on a connection, because your plan starts when it first connects.
If Doha is your destination or a stopover, switch the kimsim line on as the plane taxis to the gate.
Visas first. Qatar offers visa-free entry to 102 nationalities. Others apply for an e-visa on the Hayya platform or pay QAR 100 for a visa on arrival, and some nationalities must book their hotel through Discover Qatar before they fly. British citizens get a tourist visa on arrival. The passport should be valid for 6 months, and stays over 30 days need an extension from the Ministry of Interior. Do the Hayya application at home, on Wi-Fi.
At DOH, in order: turn on Data Roaming for the kimsim line only, walk to immigration, then collect your bags. Ooredoo sells Visitor SIMs at Qatar Duty Free in the baggage collection area, at its kiosks by Exits 2, 3 and 4 in the Arrivals Hall, and at the Day 2 Day store. With your eSIM already working, you can walk past them.
Into Doha: the Doha Metro Red Line runs from the airport's Terminal 1 station into the city, with stops at Msheireb, West Bay and Lusail. Karwa taxis are turquoise, and you can book one in the Karwa app. The UK Foreign Office advises using pre-booked taxis or recognised taxi apps, and checking the registration number.
The Foreign Office also warns that regional tensions can close airspace at short notice. Keep your airline's app working, because rebooking messages arrive there first.
Networks and coverage
Qatar has two mobile operators: Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar. Ooredoo traded as Qtel until 2013, so older guides use that name. It launched commercial 5G in Qatar in May 2018. Your phone shows the Qatari operator's name, not kimsim.
Expect strong coverage in Doha, Lusail, The Pearl, Al Wakrah and along the main highways. It thins out in the southern desert, around the dunes of the Inland Sea and in the empty land near the Saudi border. The networks your plan uses are listed above.
Doha, the desert and the north
- Doha: the Corniche, Souq Waqif and West Bay are covered well. Souq Waqif stands on the site of Doha's century-old trading market.
- Lusail: at the northern end of the Red Line, linked to the Lusail Tram. Covered like the city.
- Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid): a nature reserve about 78 km south of Doha, on the border with Saudi Arabia. Signal can drop between the dunes. Download an offline map and share your location before you set off. The Foreign Office advises a properly equipped 4x4, travelling in convoy, and taking water and a phone.
- Al Zubarah: the ruined town on the north-west coast has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013 and is about 105 km from Doha. It's a long, empty drive, so load your map before you leave.
- The Saudi border: the Salwa road runs south to the crossing at Abu Samra. A Qatar plan stops at the border. Near it, your phone may also pick up a Saudi network. See the Saudi Arabia eSIM.
This is general guidance, not a coverage map. If the signal is weak where you're staying, check your network settings.
Metro, taxis, buses and driving
The Doha Metro has three lines, Red, Green and Gold, which meet at Msheireb. A day of travel costs at most QAR 6, and trains stop on Friday mornings for prayers. Buy tickets from the station machines. Karwa buses connect Doha to the main towns, and Metrolink buses feed the stations. The Karwa Journey Planner app has the routes.
If you drive, UK visitors need the 1968 International Driving Permit alongside their licence. Using a phone while driving can bring a QR 500 fine, so set the route before you pull away.
Apps worth having
- Karwa books the state taxis and limousines. In some areas it offers a free shared ride to the nearest metro or tram station.
- Uber runs in Doha around the clock, can book a local taxi, and lets you book rides up to 30 days ahead, which helps for a dawn flight. Sign up at home, while any text code reaches your usual number.
- Careem is not an option for rides here: its ride service lists nine countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but not Qatar. Don't count on the app you used in Dubai.
- Talabat delivers food, groceries and medicine in Qatar.
- WhatsApp is how hotels, drivers and desert tour operators message you. Messages work over kimsim data. Keep your WhatsApp number working abroad.
- Google Maps: download Qatar offline before any desert or north-coast drive.
Calling apps in Qatar
Qatar isn't like the UAE here. Qatar's VoIP policy, published by the regulator, says there are "no laws or rules that prohibit the use of such technology", and that anyone may use internet calls for their own use. Only selling calls to the public needs a licence. The regulator has also warned people in Qatar about scam calls arriving "through OTT apps like WhatsApp, IMO and Viber". In other words, those calls get through.
Residents have reported spells when app calls failed or dropped. We haven't tested calling apps on our plans in Qatar. Your eSIM is data only, with no phone number, so for a call that really matters, keep your home line on for normal calls and texts.
SIM and phone rules
A Qatari visitor SIM is a new Qatari number registered to your passport. Depending on how you buy it, that can mean a passport scan, a live selfie and an email address. Vodafone's eSIM download is free, while its physical SIM costs QAR 15, and the pack is charged on top. Ooredoo's Visitor SIM line lasts a month, and its bundle data works in Qatar only, not while roaming. Ooredoo also sells it at the Bu Samra border post.
A travel eSIM installed at home skips the counter and the passport check, and keeps your home SIM in the phone.
Common mistakes
- Starting a plan on a layover. A Global or Middle East plan covers Qatar too, so it starts in Doha if it connects there. Keep it off in the terminal until your real destination. If your plan started early
- Leaving Data Roaming on for your home line. Qatar is in the dearer zones of many home carriers' price lists. Why roaming goes on for the kimsim line only
- Driving into Saudi Arabia on a Qatar plan. Past Abu Samra it's another country. How regional plans work
- Filming people. The Foreign Office warns that taking or sharing pictures of people without their consent can bring prison or a fine of up to 100,000 riyals.
- Relying on a data-only line in an emergency. Call 999 for an ambulance, fire or police from your home line or any local phone; a data-only eSIM can't dial it.

How we put this page together
We checked operators' own pages, Qatar's tourism and visa pages, the regulator's VoIP policy, the UK Foreign Office, carriers' roaming price pages and the other sources noted above on 1–3 November 2026, and we'll keep them up to date. Vodafone Qatar's visitor page didn't load for us, so its price comes from a July 2026 local guide that quotes Vodafone's tariff. We haven't measured speeds or coverage in Qatar ourselves, and we haven't tested calling apps on our plans there, so coverage notes are general guidance, not a map. kimsim sells the eSIMs on this page.

Qatar eSIM: questions travellers ask
Do WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work in Qatar?
Generally, yes. Qatar's telecoms policy says anyone may use internet calling apps for their own calls; only selling such calls needs a licence. Qatar's regulator has itself warned about scam calls arriving on WhatsApp, IMO and Viber, so these calls do connect. Residents have reported spells when app calls dropped, so keep your home line as a backup for a call that matters.
Do I need an eSIM for a layover at Doha airport?
Usually not. Hamad International has free #HIAQatar Wi-Fi across the terminal for up to four hours at a time, and you can reconnect after that. If you're only changing planes, keep any eSIM that covers Qatar switched off, because its days would start as soon as it connects. Switch it on if you're leaving the airport for a stopover.
Is there a free SIM or eSIM at Doha airport?
Not a free data SIM. Ooredoo sells its Visitor SIM in the baggage hall and at kiosks in Arrivals, and the cheapest pack is QR 75 for 6 GB over 7 days. Vodafone Qatar's eSIM is free to download, but you still pay for the pack. The free part is the airport Wi-Fi, which is useful for a short layover.
Is an Ooredoo or Vodafone visitor SIM cheaper than an eSIM?
It can be on data per riyal: Ooredoo's Visitor SIM Go is QR 75 for 6 GB and 25 local minutes over 7 days, and Vodafone's Ahlan Pack 65 is QR 65 for 5 GB. Both are a new Qatari number registered to your passport, and you buy them after you land. Compare them with the 7-day price in the plan picker above, which works as soon as you land.
Does a Qatar eSIM work in Saudi Arabia or Dubai?
No. A Qatar plan works in Qatar only, and Saudi Arabia starts at the Abu Samra border on the Salwa road. The Middle East plan shown above covers Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but not the UAE. For Doha plus Dubai, the Global plan covers both; check every stop is on its list before you buy.
Which network does the Qatar eSIM use?
A kimsim Qatar eSIM connects to ooredoo (5G). It does this on its own once Data Roaming is on for the kimsim line, so there's nothing to choose.
Does the Qatar eSIM work on 5G?
Yes, on ooredoo, where there's 5G coverage and your phone supports 5G. Everywhere else it uses 4G, which is plenty for maps, messages, social media and video calls.
How much data do I need for a week in Qatar?
Many travellers use around 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. For a typical week, the 10 GB pack is a sensible start, and you can top up onto the same eSIM. If you stream or use hotspot every day, Unlimited suits you better.
Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Qatar?
Yes. kimsim Unlimited gives you 3 GB at full speed every day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of that day, which is fine for messages, maps and music but not HD video. Pick how many days you need; the allowance resets daily.
Can I use my Qatar eSIM in other countries?
An eSIM for Qatar works in Qatar only. For a trip that goes further, Middle East (5 countries), Global (117 countries) cover Qatar and more countries on one eSIM. Check every country on your trip is on the plan's list before you buy.
